Geometry, Counting, & Spatial Reasoning

A Weeklong Summer Camp for 3rd - 5th graders
Based on the “Geometry and Spatial Sense” course I developed
while teaching for the Center for Talented Youth (CTY)

COW HOLLOW, SAN FRANCISCO
JUNE 15-19, 2026

9am - 3pm

OUTER RICHMOND, SAN FRANCISCO
JULY 27-31, 2026

9am - 3pm

Who

3rd - 5th* graders who enjoy math and wish to understand math more deeply and experience greater challenge. (We are open to strong 2nd graders too!)

Goals

Reinforce key geometry and counting content, and expose them to deeper geometry and counting problems than they experience in school

Develop an understanding of why math works and how concepts are connected, often in surprising ways

Develop strong problem-solving and logic skills, which can be applied to any future learning

Satisfy students via extensions & challenge topics based on my years of experience developing deep curriculum for elementary and middle school students for the Center for Talented Youth (Johns Hopkins), Bridge to Enter Advanced math (AoPS) and the San Francisco Math Circle

Develop teamwork and communication skills by discussing and presenting their work

Topics

Topics include a combination of standard geometry concepts commonly taught in middle and high school, and a multitude of extension problems that combine geometry, counting, and spatial reasoning. Most activities will be hands-on, involving coloring, compass & straightedge, rearranging objects, puzzles, games, etc. We will customize all programming to the group itself.

  • Congruence, Similarity, Reflections

  • Polyominoes: developing algorithms to count them, tiling puzzles, nets of cubes

  • Compass & straightedge constructions, including ancient method for approximating pi

  • Proofs of basic compass & straightedge constructions

  • 2D Geometry: angles, perimeter, circumference

  • Which regular polygons tile the plane? And math art through creating tesselations

  • 3D Geometry: Surface Area & Volume; Platonic solids

  • What is the 4th dimension?

  • Geometric origami

  • Map & Graph Coloring

  • Other notions of distance…

  • Math Yoga

  • & More

Daily Schedule

  • Fun warm up activity

  • More serious math session

  • Morning break

  • Continued math session

  • Longer mid-day break to include outdoor recess at nearby park

  • Afternoon math session

  • Reflections / sharing

We will invite parents to an end-of-week celebration on Friday afternoon!

Logistics

Week-long Math Camps in small cohorts of 8 students max.

Since we are expecting mixed-age groups, students will be split into subgroups based on grade / knowledge / ability. There are plenty of math challenges to go around!

“Kyla revolutionized my expectations of what can happen in an elementary math class… her focus was on student curiosity and growth and on eliciting contributions from every child in the room. Kyla is a master at bringing out the best in students and bringing their enthusiasm about math to the next level!”

— Bethany Edstrom, former Site Director, Center for Talented Youth (CTY)

“The problems were hard but fun and I LOVED the challenge!”

— 7th grade student at Bridge to Enter Advanced Math (BEAM)
